ABSTRACT:
In this research, the author carried out a classroom experiment aimed at reframing the understanding of Japanese language teaching stereotypes and analyzed the following two questions: “Which transformations were observed in the participants?” and “How do the participants evaluate these classes?”. The classes were designed on Byram’s (1997, 2005, 2008, 2021) theoretical and methodological assumptions of intercultural competence. By analyzing the data collected in in-class discussions and interviews with the participants, the author was able to draw the following conclusions: the participants became aware of a number of issues, including the variety of stereotypes, the process by which stereotypes are created and the attitudes related to perpetuating stereotypes. The author also found that the participants evaluated the classes positively.
